1 in 4 Latinx Students do not finish High School
6 in 10 Latinx Students do not go to College or University
2nd Generation Latinxs have the 2nd lowest income amongst all ethnic groups
Purpose of Campaign: To advocate to the education system to improve the learning conditions of children, youth, and students from the Toronto Latin-America Diaspora.
Demand #1: FUND
The Government of Ontario must properly fund our classrooms and schools. From 2016 to 2020, 1 in 4 students from the Latin-America Diaspora did not complete high school in 4 years. This one of the lowest graduation rates, second only to Indigenous students (Latinx Task Force Motion, 2024). They also have the lowest university enrollment rate among all ethnic groups in Canada (Canada, 2024). From 2020–2021, only 39% of students from the Latin-America Diaspora confirmed a college or university placement in the Toronto District School Board (Latinx Task Force Motion, 2024). The Ontario Government must increase targeted funding and support for students from the Latin-America Diaspora.
Demand #2: RESTORE
The government of Ontario needs to restore the Latinx Task Force of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), it must also restore the daily International Languages Program within the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), and maintain or enhance the International Languages Program in the TDSB.
The TDSB Task Force was created to support students from the Latin-America Diaspora who have been underserved by the education system and have not reached their full potential. It held public consultations with parents, education workers, and students in Spring 2025. However, the Task Force was cancelled in September 2025, and its findings were never released. This Task Force must be restored.
Demand #3: SUPPORT
The Government of Ontario must better support students from the Latin-America Diaspora who wish to pursue college or university. Second-generation individuals from the Latin-America Diaspora have the second-lowest average employment income in Ontario across all ethnic groups, at $34,880 (Canada, 2021). Those with college or university credentials have an average income of $44,960 (Canada, 2021). Our community needs stronger pathways to post-secondary education. This includes improving the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), which has been reduced in recent years.
